If you are planning to work, travel too, obtain dual-citizenship, get married in, or move to the country of Spain, you may be asked to obtain an apostille on your FBI background check. Spain is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention and documents destined for this country will require an apostille from the U.S. Department of State.

If you are in the beginning stages and have not yet submitted your fingerprints directly to the FBI, we recommend that you contact an FBI Channeler to help expedite the background check process. In most cases, the FBI Channeler will be able to obtain the background check within one week. If you decide to go through the FBI directly, the processing time is 14-16 weeks. All questions related to obtaining your background check should be directed to the FBI Channeler.

In additional to the FBI Apostille, you may be asked to also have several other documents apostilled. For example, if you plan to get married in Spain, the country may request a certified copy of your birth certificate, divorce decree (If you are divorced) or single status affidavit. The current processing time with the U.S. Department of State – Office of Authentications is 3-4 business days. Once we receive your documents, we will process them through the U.S. Department of the State the following business morning. The only documents you need to mail-in to our office is the FBI Background check, order form, and credit card authorization form. You do not need to mail in the DS 4194 form.

Form DS-4194 – Authentication Apostille

The FBI authentication letter you will receive in the mail through the FBI Channeler is a U.S. Federal Government document which can only be authenticated by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.  This blue-tinted letter which is signed by the FBI Section Chief (Example: https://www.apostillefbi.com/fbi-apostille-example/ ) is printed on a special tamper-resistant paper.  If you attempt to make a copy, it will read “Void” or “Copy Unauthorized”.

If you are in a rush and you already have the blue-tinted authentication letter, we recommend that you mail your document to our office in Washington, D.C. for fast 3-4 business day processing.  Please allow 1-2 additional business days for UPS overnight delivery.  If you would like to deal with the U.S. Department of State yourself, you will need to download Form DS-4194 and mail your documents directly to the State Department.  Please note that unless your documents are hand-delivered and picked-up from the U.S. Department of State, the processing time can exceed 30 days.

US Department of State ApostilleDepending on the time of year, the US Department of State – Office of Authentication can take up to four business days to authenticate your documents.

Once your documents have been received at our office, our staff will hand-deliver your documents the following business morning to the US Department of State’s Office in Washington, DC.  At that time, we will receive a document receipt and a pick-up date on when your documents will be ready.  *Note: Documents mailed in to the state can take weeks to process.

The U.S. Department of State authenticates FBI documents being sent to countries who are members of the Hague Apostille Convention.  Because this document is a document issued by the FBI, it’s considered a Federal Document and needs to be authenticated by the U.S. Department of State (Federal Government).
